Selfish Chippy

Proper fish and chips, done the old-fashioned way.

Selfish Chippy

Welcome to Selfish Chippy

We're a small family chippy in Beeston, just off the high street, and we've been frying fish the same way for over thirty years. No shortcuts, no frozen batters—just fresh cod and haddock from Grimsby, potatoes from local farms, and beef dripping that gives our chips that proper golden crunch.

The name came about as a bit of a joke. My dad used to say that when you're queuing for fish and chips on a Friday night, everyone's thinking the same thing: I want the biggest piece. So why not call it what it is? We stuck with it, and now half the regulars won't let us change it even if we wanted to.

What We Serve

Our menu is simple because we believe in doing a few things well. Everything's cooked to order, so there's always a short wait, but it's worth it.

We prepare the batter fresh every morning, and the fish comes in four times a week. Chips are hand-cut daily, and we fry in small batches to keep the oil clean. That's the difference you can taste.

  • Cod and chips – £8.50
  • Haddock and chips – £9.20
  • Fishcake – £2.80
  • Jumbo sausage – £3.50
  • Mushy peas or curry sauce – £1.50
  • Steak and kidney pie – £4.20
  • Children's portion (small fish or sausage with chips) – £5.00

How We Work

We're open Tuesday to Saturday, closing Sundays and Mondays because everyone needs a break. Peak times are Thursday and Friday evenings, so if you're in a rush, come earlier in the week or ring ahead and we'll have your order ready.

We don't do delivery ourselves, but we work with a couple of the local drivers who know how to keep things hot. You're always welcome to collect—it's fresher that way, and you'll avoid the markup.

Our Story

My grandparents opened this place in 1987 after moving down from Hull, where they'd run a chippy near the docks. They wanted somewhere quieter, and Beeston fit the bill. My dad took over in the nineties, and I joined him full-time about ten years ago after a stint working in kitchens around Nottingham.

We've kept the same fryers, the same recipes, and the same approach. It's not fancy, but it doesn't need to be. People come here because they know what they're getting, and because we remember their names and their usual orders. That's the kind of place we wanted to be.

Why We're Still Here

Plenty of chippies have closed around here in the last few years. Rent goes up, suppliers change hands, and it's hard to compete with the big chains. We've stayed because we own the building, because we're careful with costs, and because our customers have stuck with us.

It helps that we're not trying to be something we're not. No gourmet fish tacos, no loyalty apps. Just fish, chips, and a chat if you want one. That's enough for most people, and it's enough for us.

Find Us in Beeston

We're on Chilwell Road, about five minutes' walk from Beeston train station. There's a small car park round the back that we share with the laundrette, or you can park on the street after six. If you're coming by tram, get off at Beeston Centre and walk south—it's less than ten minutes.

The shop's easy to spot. We've got the green and white awning, and there's usually a queue on Fridays. If you're not sure, look for the smell.
